” When all of your flaws and all of my flaws are laid out one by one. The wonderful part of the mess that we made, we pick ourselves undone . All of your flaws and all of my flaws they lay there hand in hand . Ones we’ve inherited, ones that we’ve learned that pass from man to man. There’s a hole in my soul, I can’t fill it I can’t fill it. There’s a hole in my soul, can you fill it ? Can you fill it ? ” -Bastille
holes. scabs. places we’ve tried to cover with band-aids.
they hold alot of power for such small , hidden things. because we do whatever it takes to protect them from further injury. it’s a copious duty , this caring for our flaws and hurts.
and they have a ravenous hunger… to be fed and kept quiet. or at the very least, roped off with bright yellow caution tape. either way, we become untouchable and
demanding others to play the game by our rules. demanding they not prick our scab or enter carelessly into the caution zone.
but even the toughest, most vigilant of souls grows weary in this battle. and our pride grows an ever-thickening skin… so Christ made grace look gentle. like a sloping off-ramp marked “rest stop”.
it’s our way out and off.
an exit, a place to catch our breath and begin to really see ourselves. to get off the rollercoaster of living a demanded and entitled life. a life where things must go “our way” or else ! where others need to tip toe around us. where protecting our shamefulness sucks every bit of joy from us.
instead, Jesus invites the weary soul to rest. to find spaciousness. to live altogether differently than the small life of self-protecting. He wants us to lay our weak parts on the table of grace and let Him tend to them , bring them into the light… and only then do we become free from their insatiable power. and to our surprise, beauty begins to take root in the frailest and flawed places of our heart.
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to Me. Get away with Me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with Me and work with Me- watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with Me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matthew 11: 28,29 The Message
Father, let me wake to your unforced rhythms of grace each day. give me braveness as i bring my weaknesses and entitlements to Your table of grace, knowing it is my saving grace. and my only way off the crazy path of self preservation …my off-ramp into true rest and beauty.
